SOUTHINGTON, December 12, 2018 — For a majority of programs across the state Wednesday night was opening night of the high school wrestling season.
Southington rallied from a 17-point deficit to take the lead with one match remaining but Bristol Eastern’s Trinidad Gonzalez (220) got a pin to lift the Lancers to a 39-34 decision over Southington in a thriller.
Eastern led for most of the match and increased their lead to 17 points, 33-16, when Justin Marshall (152) and Noah Piazza (160) each won by pin. But Southington responded when Billy Carr (170), Matt Jacobson (182) and Paul Calo (195) won with pins to give the Blue Knights their first lead since the opening match, 34-33.
Eastern extends their school-record winning streak to 37 in a row.
With six pins, Wethersfield outlasted Berlin, 57-21. Berlin dedicated their secondary gym in honor of long-time wrestling coach Jim Day, who died unexpectedly last March. … Windham had five pins as they outlasted Bacon Academy, 39-34 in an ECC bout … Xavier won 11 matches to beat Fairfield Prep, 63-13. … Brunswick (5-1) won seven of eight matches on the mat and took advantage of six forfeits in a 74-6 win over Choate Rosemary Hall. … In the debut of head coach Rich Anderson, Notre Dame-West Haven came away with a convincing 66-12 win over Portland with seven pins. … Are we missing your score?
