TROY, N.Y., November 10 – Newtown graduate Anthony Falbo (174 pounds) and Gerard Daly (141) each won two matches Saturday for Sacred Heart University as the Pioneers picked a pair of Division I wins on the same day at the Journeymen Northeast Duals.

Thanks to three pins and two individual victories, Sacred Heart beat Bloomsburg University, 24-19, and beat The Citadel for the first time since 2001 with a 24-22 victory. The Pioneers dropped a 55-0 decision to No. 26 Appalachian State. It was the first dual meets of the season for Sacred Heart (2-1) and second-year head coach John Clark.

Daly, Brandon Levesque (165) and Connor Fredericks (197) picked up pins for Sacred Heart in the win over Bloomsburg. Falbo won with an 8-4 decision while Paul Klee prevailed with a one-point decision, 6-5.

Against The Citadel, Daly, Falbo and Kyle Davis (184) came up with pins for the Pioneers while Anthony Petrillo (125) and Seth Brown (133) picked up key decisions. Petrillo won by one and Brown won by two points. It was the first two collegiate victories for Falbo, who picked up his first collegiate pin against The Citadel.

It is the first time since 2008-09 that the Hearts have beaten two Division I teams in the same season. In 2009, the Hearts went 7-10 and beat three Division I teams – Princeton, Franklin & Marshall and Wagner, which dropped the sport following that season.

Since 2009, the Hearts have earned Division I dual meet victories against VMI, Davidson and Bloomsburg along with dual meet victories against Division II AIC, Millersville and Shippensburg and Division III Stevens Tech.

Sacred Heart returns to action on Sunday, Nov. 19 when they head to the Keystone Classic at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia.

What happened at Perdue with Falbo? Too competitive? He’s an amazing wrestler but the Big10 is obviously the deepest part of the food chain.
