No. 3 Fairfield Warde tops New Canaan in FCIAC battle

NEW CANAAN, January 31 — In a battle of the top two teams in the FCIAC East, No. 3 Fairfield Warde (14-1, 6-0 FCIAC East) remained in first place with a 54-22 win over New Canaan (11-3, 5-1). The Mustangs used four pins and took advantage of four forfeits to earn the win. … Pomperaug (10-5) got key pins from Michaela Quinn (120), Dan Germain (132) Nick Sullivan (138) and Andrew Anglace (220) to slip past Joel Barlow, 42-39. … Even without five starting wrestlers out of the lineup, Fairfield Ludlowe beat Norwalk, 44-33 to improve to 9-9 on the year. … Simsbury won the first three matches by pin to build an 18-point lead but No. 4 Southington (9-2, 5-0) won eight of the next 10 bouts to earn a 48-27 victory and remain in first place in the CCC South. It was the first conference loss for the Trojans (8-4, 4-1). … Avon (13-7, 3-2 CCC North) handed Manchester their first conference loss with a 43-33 victory over the Indians (6-7, 3-1). …No. 9 Montville (16-2) beat Griswold, 52-14 but it wasn’t easy. Seven of the 14 matches went the distance with one going into overtime. … Two Connecticut wrestlers are ranked in the latest national girls wrestling rankings as determined by the National Wrestling Hall of Fame, USA Wrestling and FloWrestling. Terryville’s Cara Broadus (138), a senior at CREC’s Academy of Science and Innovation in New Britain, is ranked No. 2 in the nation while New Milford’s Joanne Ortiz is ranked No. 6 at 106 pounds.
