Outlook: For the second consecutive year, two-time defending New England champion Ponaganset, R.I., has 11 wrestlers in the tournament after winning 10 weight classes in last week’s RI state tournament. The Chieftains had a state record 315½ points and beat second place Bishop Hendricken by 137 points. Jared Hood (126) became just the seventh wrestler in Rhode Island to win four consecutive state titles while teammate Joseph Joyce (144) won his third Rhode Island title. Hood and Joyce and two of the two Ponaganset wrestlers looking for consecutive New England titles.

No. 1 Xavier is bringing eight wrestlers, the most of any Connecticut team. The Falcons, who had four finalists and two individual champions, won their fourth straight State Open title a week ago. They scored the second-most points in New England tournament history a year ago and lost by 60 points to Ponaganset. “If we get some help from other teams, hopefully we will have a shot to go head to-head (on the mat) with them,” Xavier coach Mike Cunningham.

Shawsheen Valley Tech, which won the Massachusetts’ All-State meet, has seven wrestlers, including two Massachusetts champions – James and Sidney Tildsley. Central Catholic also qualified seven wrestlers from the Bay State. Sidney Tildsley of Shawsheen Valley Tech (150) and Thomas Brown of Chelmsford (285) became the fourth and fifth wrestlers, respectively, to win four Massachusetts All-State titles. Tildsley is aiming for a third New England title and automatic entrance into the New England High School Wrestling Hall of Fame. Brown is hoping to win his second consecutive New England title.

As in any tournament, the key will be picking up victories – especially victories in the consolation bracket.
