Danbury wins 400th straight FCIAC match

DANBURY, Dec. 27 — Danbury (4-0) beat Darien, 81-0, Norwalk, 78-6 and Staples, 75-6 to extend their FCIAC winning streak to 400 dual meets. The last time that the Hatters lost to an FCIAC opponent was January 1986 when they lost to Greenwich, 37-24. New Milford was the last Connecticut team to beat Danbury in February, 2015. Danbury had 10 pins each against Norwalk and Staples. Danbury’s Tyler Johnson (113) had an eight-second pin against Norwalk.

With three individual champions and six wrestlers in the top three of their weight class, Simsbury won the Frank Chaves Tournament for a record 17th time. The Trojans beat Pomperaug by four points, 175-171, the closest finish since Middletown won by 2½ points in 2002. Bristol Central’s Chris Trelli went 4-0 to win Outstanding Wrestler honors. … With five wins, Trumbull improved to 10-0 on the season. … Killingly (6-0) beat West Springfield, MA, 47-37 to win four matches and capture the 22nd annual Enfield Duals. … With four individual champions, New Milford finished second to host St. Anthony, N.Y. at the Friar Bash. Joanne Ortiz (106), Brandon Leonard (126), Mel Ortiz (138) and Kyle Fabich (182) won for the Green Wave. Adam Henrick (170) won a title for Hand, which finished third. … Angelo Folino won at 120 pounds while Liam Smith (152) and Joshua Schwartz (160) finished second as Northwestern took fourth at the Berkshire Holiday Tournament in Great Barrington, Mass
