Despite loss, Danbury remains No. 1 in poll

DANBURY, January 22 — Danbury lost their first match of the season a week ago to Mt. Anthony, Vermont but the Hatters (8-1) still remained the No. 1 ranked team in week 3 of the Connecticut Wrestling Online top 10 wrestling poll.

Danbury received 16 of 18 first place votes with two going to No. 2 Bristol Eastern (5-0), which won the Suffern, N.Y. Tournament on Saturday – the fourth tournament win of the year for the Lancers. Fairfield Warde (5-1) remained at No. 3 with New Milford (5-0) moving up one spot to No. 4 after winning their annual New Milford Tournament.

Southington (6-2) finished second at the TImberlane, N.H. tournament on Saturday but slipped one spot to No. 5. After a one-week absence, Hand (12-2) rejoined the top 10 at No. 10. Foran-Milford dropped out of the top 10 but remains close at No. 11.

Colleges
Trumbull junior Cross Cannone (149) is ranked No. 1 in NCAA Division III for Wartburg College in Waverly, Iowa. Cannone is 23-0 with 13 tech falls, 5 major decisions and two pins. He is ranked No. 2 in the nation in Division III in tech falls. Wartburg is ranked No. 2 in the nation in Division III.

Youth wrestling
Lebanon’s Lucas Judd, 8, of MarcAurele Wrestling won the 8 and under, 64-pound weight class at the 63rd Flo Tulsa Nationals Sunday in Tulsa Oklahoma, the oldest junior wrestling event in the world. Judd was 5-0 with a 2-1 win in the semifinals over Andrew Moro of Grand Rapids, Michigan and a 2-1 in the final over Dawson Youngbult of Volga, Iowa. … ​Old Lyme’s Chase Catalano (75) was fourth in the 8 and under division while Marlborough’s Jackson Heslin (61) was fourth in 10 and under.
