State wrestling coach qualifies for 2020 U.S. Olympic Trials in April

Jake Fisher, an assistant wrestling coach at Greens Farms Academy in Westport, qualified for the 2020 U.S. Olympics Team trials in April by finishing second at the U.S. Senior Open championships on Saturday night at 77 kilograms (169.7 pounds) in Fort Worth, Texas.

Fisher, the No. 10 seed at 77 kilograms, won his first four matches of the tournament in the Greco-Roman competition with a pin and two technical falls over No. 2 seed Peyton Walsh of the U.S. Marines in the quarterfinals in 2:19 and over RaVaughn Perkins of New York Athletic Club in 2:28. Perkins was a member of the 2018 U.S. World team.

Fisher lost to Kamay Bey in the championship, 5-1. Bey was the 2017 Junior World champion in Greco Roman and is a 2018 U.S. World team member.

Fisher, 34, is no stranger to international competition. Fisher, who grew up in Missouri and wrestled at Northern Michigan, was a member of the U.S. World Team in 2011. He won the U.S. World Team trials twice and spent six years on Team USA (2009-13 and 2014-16). Fisher captured the U.S. Open title in 2010.

He has also been coaching with the South Side Wrestling Club in Trumbull since 2017 as the club’s head Greco Roman coach.
