This championship wasn’t won on mat with individual state championships on the line. Saturday’s Class S championship was decided on the side mats in the consolation bracket.
In the final round of the day, which consisted of the championship finals, third place match and fifth place matches, Waterford went 6-3 with four pins, a forfeit and a major decision.
All of those extra points helped the Lancers win their first state championship since 2014 on Saturday as Waterford beat defending champion Killingly by a half-point to win the Class S championship, 194 to 193½ at Killingly High. ECC champion Ledyard was in the mix, too, finishing third with 188½ points.
It was the closest Class S championship meet and the third time that a CIAC meet was decided by a half-point. The previous closest Class S ournament was a two-point win by Northwestern Regional in 2005.
Killingly, who had won three of the last four Class S titles, didn’t perform poorly in the final round. The Trailblazers went 5-3 with a win in the finals and four victories in the third place matches. Ledyard was 4-3 in the final round, including a 1-3 record in the finals.
A.J. Stefano (120) and Adam Balfour (165) got pins in the third place bouts while Declan Fagan (132) and C.J. Carmody (190) picked up pins in the fifth place bouts with teammate Luke Westkoff (138) securing a forfeit.
It was Waterford’s fourth state championship and their first Class S title since 1985.
Lewis Mills’ Jack Gedney, who trains with Simsbury, became just the third wrestler in Class S history to win four straight titles with his 4-1 win over Windham’s Delmazio Despard. The last wrestler to win four consecutive Class S titles was Derby’s Anthony Marcucio in 1996-99.
Excel Padilla (165) picked up a state championship for Killingly, who had three finalists.
Somers’ William Accorsi (120) won his third Class S title while Suffield/Windsor Locks’ Peter Annis (113), Ledyard’s Lukas Boxley (138) and Plainville’s Cooper Theriault-Dinelli (175) each won their second Class S titles. Boxley was voted the tournament’s outstanding wrestler.

Class L: Xavier wins sixth straight title
With four individual champions and seven finalists, No. 1 Xavier rolled to another Class L state championship on Saturday with 256½ points in Wilton. Two-time defending Class LL champion Fairfield Warde, who moved down to Class L this winter, was second with 183 ½ points with Newtown taking third with 156.
Josh Perez (106), Treydan Beam (113), Zack Dixon (120) and Braylon Gonzalez (144) brought home championships for the Falcons. It was Dixon’s second Class L crown while Gonzalez joined a unique group with his fourth straight Class L championship.
Only 15 other wrestlers in state history have won four consecutive state titles. He is the first Xavier wrestler to win titles in all four years. Gonzalez pinned Cheshire’s Robert Perez in 1:16 for his historic victory.
Beam trailed 3-1 going into the third period against Newtown’s Owen Blair but got a four-point near fall with 49 seconds remaining in regulation to secure a 5-3 decision.
Three wrestlers picked up a second state title with Fairfield Warde’s Jude Grammatico winning at 132, Newtown’s Antonio Arguello winning at 157 and Conard’s Harry Marino winning another championship at 165 pounds.
In some competitive title bouts, Simsbury’s Giuliano Sirianni (138) made his first period takedown stand up in a 3-2 win over Bunnell’s Cayden Morin. At 175, Newtown’s Jake Maddox built a 7-0 first period lead and held off the late rallies from Xavier’s Vincent Rivera to take a 7-5 victory.
Xavier will be taking 10 wrestlers to the State Open. The top six wrestlers in each weight class qualify for the Open. The state record for most open qualifiers is 14 by Xavier in 2024. Warde, who replaced 12 starters in their lineup this year, has eight wrestlers heading to the State Open.
