Two wrestlers, coach nominated for inaugural GameTimeCT Awards

Fairfield Warde’s Jason Shaughnessy, left, and East Hartford’s Drayvn Roberts were nominated for a GameTimeCT Sports Award.

Several area athletes have been nominated for the first GameTimeCT High School Sports Awards to recognize and celebrate the outstanding performances, achievements and sportsmanship that made this year unforgettable.

The event will be held in Bridgeport at the Hartford Health Care amphitheater in Bridgeport on Wednesday, July 16, beginning at 5:30 p.m. The event is by invitation only.

Three members of the wrestling community have been nominated.

East Hartford’s Drayvn Roberts, an All-State football player and wrestler, is one of five nominees for Athlete of the Year. He was an all-purpose QB for the Hornets on the football field and won four consecutive Class LL championships in wrestling. Roberts (42-2) won his first State Open title this past winter and was third in New England. Only 11 other wrestlers in state history have won four consecutive state titles in Class LL, L, M or S.

In football, Roberts completed 102-of-146 passes for East Hartford last fall for 1,686 yards and 15 touchdown passes. He ran for 21 TDs as well. He will attend Central Connecticut State where he plans to play football.

Jason Shaughnessy, Fairfield Warde’s Hall of Fame coach, is one of five nominees for coach of the year. His Mustangs went 22-1 this past season, won their third consecutive FCIAC championship and their second straight Class LL championship with 11 wrestlers in the top six of their respective weight classes.

Warde also handed Danbury their first FCIAC loss since 1986, ending a 39-year-old winning streak against FCIAC opponents that had reached 461 dual meets. Warde had four pins and won nine of 14 matches to earn an 42-26 over Danbury.

Bristol Central’s Alex Lamarre (138 pounds) is one of three finalists for the Comeback Player of the Year award. Lamarre’s season was delayed by a broken elbow in December. He got healthy enough to qualify for the state tournament with a 6-1 record.

But he hurt his knee in the Class L semifinals. Still, he had last-second victories in the semifinals and finals to win a Class L championship with a 5-3 win over Simsbury’s Coleman Finn.

Lamarre injured his knee in his semifinal match with No. 1 seed Cayden Morin of Bunnell and needed a three-point near fall in the waning seconds of the match to earn a 4-3 decision and advance to the final.

In the final, it hurt to stand on the leg and he limped around the mat against Finn. But Lamarre got a takedown with 10 seconds left in the match to snap a 2-2 tie and take a 5-2 lead.

Lamarre recovered to finish fifth the following week at the State Open with a win over Finn in the fifth place bout and went 2-2 at the New England championships two weeks later.
