The Xavier High wrestling team, shown after winning the State Open, was voted the No. 1 team in the state in the final Connecticut Wrestling Online top 10 poll of the season.
For just the second time since the top 10 wrestling poll was established in 1983, one team has been named the No. 1 team in the state for at least four consecutive seasons.
Xavier (17-1) was the unanimous selection among the 14 voters in the final Connecticut Wrestling Online top 10 high school wrestling poll of the season.
The Falcons, who won their fifth straight Class L championship and fourth consecutive State Open title this season, have been the top team in the poll for four years. Xavier won five tournaments this season.
The only team to do this was Danbury, who was No. 1 for 14 consecutive seasons from 1997 through 2010. The poll was conducted by the Norwich Bulletin from 1983 through 2017. Connecticut Wrestling Online took over the poll in 2018.
With a second place finish at the Class L championships and State Open, Newtown (13-5) finished No. 2 in the poll for the second consecutive year.
Fairfield Warde (22-1), which won their second straight Class LL title and third consecutive FCIAC pennant, finished third in the poll for the second year. The Mustangs won four tournaments this season.
East Hartford (20-1) finished No. 4 in the poll for the third consecutive season. The Hornets have finished in the top four for the past four seasons.
Ridgefield (13-2) finished at No. 5, their highest-ever finish in the final top 10 poll. The Tigers were at No. 7 a year ago.
Danbury (12-2) finished at No. 6. The Hatters haven’t missed an end-of-season top 10 poll since 1987.
East Lyme/Norwich Tech, which was third in Class L and sixth at the State Open, leaped into the top 10 for the first time this season at No. 7. The Vikings finished at 12-5.
Class S champion Killingly (32-2) won a state-high six tournaments this year. Killingly ended up the season at No. 8 in the final top 10 poll. It was their seventh top 10 finish since 2018.
Class M champion Foran (31-5) moved up one shot to No. 9. Foran captured four tournaments this year.
Rounding out the top 10 this year is New Milford at No. 10, down two spots from No. 8 two weeks ago.
