Xavier wins fifth straight Class L championship

Gilbert co-op wrestler Evan Schibi (157) got a takedown with four seconds left to win a state championship Saturday. Schibi, shown earlier this year, was named the tournament’s most outstanding wrestler.

With four individual champions and seven finalists, Xavier won their fifth straight Class L championship with a 296½ to 219 victory over Newtown at Wilton High.

It’s the longest run of consecutive Class L titles in state history, surpassing the previous record of four in a row by New Milford from 2013-16.

Xavier had 11 wrestlers finish in the top five of their respective weight class to earn a spot in next weekend’s CIAC State Open championships.

Xavier’s Braylon Gonzalez beat Middletown’s Isaiah McDaniel, 11-2, in the finals at 132 pounds to win his third straight Class L title. Teammates Zack Dixon (106), Bradley Ament (113) and Max Morse (175) also won titles for the Falcons.

Newtown was led by Kenna Gioffre (120), Antonio Arguello (150) and Marc Maurath (165), who won individual championships for the Nighthawks. Gioffre won his second straight Class L title.

After Bunnell’s Mael Pierre-Paul (126) tied his championship final with New Milford’s Alex Oberc at 5-5 with an escape and takedown early in the third period, Oberc’s escape with 1:21 remaining was the difference in a 6-5 victory.

With a takedown with four seconds remaining, junior Evan Schibi of Gilbert/Torrington/Wolcott Tech won his second straight Class L title with a 4-1 win over Newtown’s Jake Maddox. Schibi, who beat Maddox by a single point (3-2) in the finals in 2024, was named the tournament’s outstanding wrestler. Schibi had a pin and two technical falls in the tournament.

It was Schibi’s third CIAC championship. He won a Class S championship as a freshman in 2022.

East Lyme/Norwich Tech’s Lincoln Carlson (215) won his second straight Class L title with four pins to help his team to their best finish in a CIAC tournament since taking second in 1992 at the Class M championships. East Lyme/NT teammate Jonathan Harms (285) won at 285 pounds.

With three pins and a technical fall, Simsbury sophomore Max Konopka (190) won his second straight Class L title.
