With eight wrestlers finishing in the top three of their individual weight classes, Killingly won their third straight Class S championship on Saturday with a 225½ to 172 win over Stafford in Danielson.

Killingly (32-2) had one individual champion and six finalists and grabbed their fourth Class S title in the last five years and their eighth in program history.

“It’s the first-ever three-peat in Killingly history,” Killingly head coach Rich Bowen said. “A great team effort. We had eight wrestlers place in the top three. We also set a school record for dual meet wins at 32. A truly great team effort all year.”

Killingly’s Anthony Oates (285) got a reversal with 59 seconds left in the third period to snap a 7-7 tie and earn a 10-7 win over Waterford’s Cooper Myers in the finals and his second consecutive Class S title.

Stafford had their best-ever finish in a CIAC tournament with their second-place finish. The Bulldogs had eight wrestlers finish in the top six of their respective weight classes. Stafford’s Kaiden Jellison (175) outlasted Nonnewaug’s Joey Bernardi, 4-3, to win an individual championship.

“I’m very proud of what this team has accomplished this year,” Stafford coach Rich Ives said. “This is such a great group of wrestlers. They’ve worked hard and continued to improve and rally together throughout the season.”

Lewis Mills junior Jack Gedney (126) won his third straight Class S championship with a 9-4 win over Windham’s Delmazio Despard.

Gedney, the only wrestler from his school, trains with Simsbury and was the No. 8 seed. Gedney beat top-seeded Seth Christie of Griswold/Wheeler in the quarterfinals with a pin and blanked Ledyard’s Joseph Crader in the semifinals, 5-0.

Somers’ William Accorsi (113) won his second straight Class S title with a technical fall win over Killingly’s Ronald Wood IV while his brother, Harrison Accorsi (132), pinned Canton’s Nick Leadbetter to win his first state championship.

The Accorsi brothers are the 21st set of brothers to win a state title on the same day and the first pair to achieve the feat in Class S since Gilbert’s Devin Matthews and Kyle Matthews won titles together in 2020.

Sheehan’s Jay Chase (138) and Stonington’s Cooper Light (190) each won their second straight Class S championship. Chase won with a technical fall while Light outlasted Old Lyme’s Taiyo Gemme, 10-5.
