Individual wrestlers from Connecticut have earned national rankings in the rankings compiled by USA Wrestling, FloWrestling and the National Wrestling Hall of Fame.
Now, a girls team from Connecticut is nationally ranked.
Choate Rosemary Hall in Wallingford is ranked No. 12 in the latest rankings released on January 1. Choate moves up from No. 30 in the first rankings of the year in November.
There are just a few girls teams in Connecticut – all at the prep school level level.
Choate won the third annual Beast of the East tournament in Newark, Delaware in December with two individual champions and five girls that finished in the top eight of their respective weight classes.
Norwalk’s Calli Gilchrist (120) won at Beast of the East with Sarah McLaughlin (125) also winning an individual title.
Choate also won the St. Paul School’s women’s tournament earlier in December, beating 16 other teams including last year’s prep school New England champion (Andover) and last year’s public school New England champion (Noble, ME). Choate had four individual champions in the meet, seven finalists and 10 wrestlers that finished in the top four.
Gilchrist, McLaughlin, Lily Runez (107) and Tatianna Irizarry (114) each won at the St. Paul’s tournament.
Wyoming Seminary in Pennsylvania remains the No. 1 team in the country, followed by Bixby, Oklahoma, Olentangy Orange (Ohio), Cleveland, Tenn., and Broken Arrow, Oklahoma.
There are 38 states represented in the January 2025 national ranking. California has the most ranked teams with seven. Pennsylvania, Texas and Iowa are next with six ranked teams. The committee will have two more team rankings this season, in early February and the final rankings in mid-March.
