The Sacred Heart men’s wrestling team put a more experienced collegiate team on the mat Sunday in their season opener against Presbyterian College in Clinton, South Carolina.
Nine of the 10 wrestlers that the Pioneers put on the mat had at least two years of experience in collegiate programs. Two wrestlers – Andrew Fallon (133) and Vincent Milazzo (149) — are beginning their fifth collegiate season.
That experienced helped the Pioneers win their season-opening match with a 32-11 win over Presbyterian College for their first opening day victory since November 2021.
Sacred Heart (1-0), under eighth-year head coach John Clark, won seven of 10 bouts with two pins and two technical falls. The Pioneers won seven of the first eight matches to take a 32-3 lead.
Jake Trovato (197) and Brendan Gilchrist of Norwalk (285) picked up wins by pin with Felix Lettini and Fallon won by technical fall. Lettini made his debut with Sacred Heart on Sunday after wrestling two seasons with Wisconsin.
Sacred Heart returns to action on Saturday when they travel to Bethlehem, Pa., to participate in the Journeyman Duals at Liberty High. Sacred Heart will face Buffalo and Virginia Military Institute. On Sunday, the Pioneers will participate in the Journeyman Duals tournament.
