Plymouth’s Cara Broadus earned All-American honors for the second time to help the Sacred Heart women’s wrestling finish sixth at Saturday’s National Collegiate Women’s Wrestling Championship meet in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

Broadus, who finished fourth at 170 pounds, was one of four All-American wrestlers for Sacred Heart. Madison Sandquist, who took sixth at 155, earned All-American honors for the third time while Alexander Fitzgerald (fifth, 123) became a two-time All-American.

Freshman Love Daley, who lost her first match at 170, won five of six matches in the consolation round to finish fifth and earn All-American honors for the first time.

In their first year as a varsity program, the University of Iowa won the NCWWC national championship as top seed Kylie Welker beat North Central College’s Yelena Makoyed in the final match of the evening to help the Hawkeyes rally past North Central, 204-198.

Welker was the top seed and faced three-time NCWWC champion Makoyed in the championship final, winning by tech fall, 11-0.

Iowa trailed by 17 points going into the champions finals but the Hawkeyes placed nine wrestlers in the finals and had five individual champions. The finals at 101 and 116 were between two Hawkeye wrestlers. North Central had two finalists and one individual champion.

King University from Tennessee was third with 163 points followed by McKendree University from Illinois with 106. Colorado Mesa was fifth with 68½ points.

Sixth place is the best finish at the national championship meet for the Pioneers, now in their third season. The 61½ points at the nationals is also a program best performance.

Broadus, Fitzgerald and Sandquist each dropped their respective quarterfinal matches but kept winning matches in the consolation round to earn All-American honors.

After winning her first two matches, Broadus (21-6) lost to McKendree’s Tristan Kelly in the quarterfinals, 10-0. But Broadus won her next three matches with a pin and two technical falls to earn a spot in the consolation final and a rematch with Kelly. Again, Kelly prevailed with a 10-0 decision.

Daley (25-5) dropped her first match of the tournament by pin to Jade Herzler of Wisconsin-Stevens Point. But then Daley won four straight matches with two pins and two technical falls before running into Kelly in the consolation semifinal and dropping a 10-0 decision.

But Daley finished with a win and a 10-0 technical fall over Wartburg’s Kami Senlycki.

Fitzgerald (27-7) won her opening match in the tournament before dropping a 10-0 technical fall decision to Virginia Foard of King University in the quarterfinals. Fitzgerald won four of her next five matches in the consolation round to take fifth. Fitzgerald beat East Stroudsburg’s Mia Macaluso by pin to in the fifth place bout.

Sandquist (27-5) became Sacred Heart’s first three-time All-American with her sixth place finish. She had a pair of pins before dropping a 11-0 loss by technical fall to Cheyenne Bowman of King University in the quarterfinals.

She beat Nina Makem of Augsburg University, 4-3 to earn All-American honors before she was pinned in the consolation semifinal by London Houston of North Central College and losing to Iowa’s Bella Mir, 3-0, in the fifth place bout.

Broadus, Daley and Fitzgerald were 5-2 in the tournament with Sandquist going 4-3.

Khadijah Sanusi (143) went 3-2 in the tournament for the Pioneers with Samantha Yap (101), Madeline Hodges (191) and Jacklyn Smith (191) each going 2-2. Aaliyah Payne-Parris (101) and Ahsia Torres (109) were each 1-2.
