The Sacred Heart women’s wrestling team won their second consecutive National Collegiate Women’s Wrestling Championship (NCWWC) regional championship on Saturday with a 49-point win over host Lock Haven University, 203-154.
The No. 7 Pioneers (17-3) put seven wrestlers in the finals and had four individual champions. Madison Sandquist (155), Alexandra Fitzgerald (123) and Aaliyah Payne-Parris (101) each won their second consecutive Region 1 championship. Love Daley (170) won an individual title, too.
Sacred Heart had 13 wrestlers qualify in 10 weight classes for the upcoming NCWWC national championship tournament on March 8-9 in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Teams were allowed to enter two wrestlers per weight class and the top four in each weight class earned a trip to the nationals.
The Pioneers qualified two wrestlers in four weight classes – 101, 116, 170 and 191 pounds. Daley beat teammate Cara Broadus for the championship at 170 pounds with a 10-0 technical fall. Daley went 4-0 with three pins in the tournament.
Payne-Parris (101) finished first with a 3-0 record and a pin while Samantha Yap (101) finished fourth. At 116, Nohea Moniz finished second and Tatiana Walker finished fourth. At 191, Madeline Hodges finished second and Jacklyn Smith was third.
