The No. 6 Sacred Heart women’s wrestling team won three of four matches to finish fifth at the 2024 National Wrestling Coaches Association’s (NWCA) national duals on January 5-6 in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

Fifteen of the top 24 teams in the latest NWCA women’s wrestling poll were in the tournament including the top seven teams in the country. Top-ranked Iowa won the tournament with a 21-20 win over No. 2 North Central College in the championship match.

The Pioneers (12-3) opened the tournament with a 24-21 win over No. 20 Emmanuel College before dropping a 32-12 decision to No. 3 King University in the quarterfinals, 32-12. Sacred Heart remained alive in the tournament with a 33-14 win over Elmira College in the consolation round.

Against Emmanuel, the Pioneers trailed by five points, 16-9 with four matches remaining but Temi Sanusi (145) picked up a win, Madison Sandquist (155) had a 10-0 win by technical and Cara Broadus (170) got a pin to clinch the victory.

In day two of the tournament, Sacred Heart won their first consolation round bout with a 30-14 win over No. 13 Presbyterian and finished fifth with a convincing 27-19 win over No. 18 Lindenwood.

Sandquist and Love Daley (170) went 3-0 for the Pioneers over the weekend while Alexandra Fitzgerald (123) went 4-1. Ahsia Torres (109) was 3-2 in five matches.

A year ago, Sacred Heart finished seventh in this tournament in Louisville with a 3-2 record,

The championship match came right to the end with No. 1 Iowa beating No. 2 North Central, 21-20. North Central won six of the 10 bouts but Iowa was able to earn crucial points throughout the match to keep it close.

Coming into the final match at 191, Iowa led 20-17. Treah Haynes of North Central led Iowa’s Jaycee Foeller, 2-0 but was called for her second passivity warning of the match. Unable to score in the 30-second activity period, Foeller picked up a crucial point. Haynes won the match, 6-1 to give North Central three points.

But in freestyle, teams can earn a point if a wrestler scores at least a point and does not get pinned. That point earned by Foeller gave the Hawkeyes one team point and the title.
