Southbury’s Sarah Henckel of Blair Academy in New Jersey won her second consecutive Beast of the East championship on Friday at the University of Delaware’s Bob Carpenter Center.

Henckel went 5-0 in the tournament with four pins to win the championship at 155 pounds. Henckel beat Kylie Monroe of Gettysburg High in Pennsylvania, 13-4 in the title match. Henckel had three pins in under a minute (16, 30, 45 seconds) to sweep through the pool portion of the tournament.

Henckel helped Blair Academy win the girls tournament with 179 points with Gettyburg finishing second with 151 points. Blair had just four wrestlers entered in the tournament and three made the finals.

It was the second year that Beast of the East held a girls-only tournament.

The boys tournament kicks off on Saturday and concludes on Sunday. Seven Connecticut wrestlers are seeded in the tournament although seeds could be adjusted on Saturday after weigh-ins.

Xavier’s Raekwon Shabazz is seeded third at 113 pounds along with Southbury’s William Henckel, who wrestles for Blair Academy, at 165 pounds. William Henckel is also ranked No. 6 in FloWrestling’s latest rankings.

Xavier’s Charles Weidman is a No. 7 seed at 215 pounds while teammate Max Morse is a No. 12 seed at 175 pounds.

New Fairfield’s Joe Mahoney (No. 12 at 126), Simsbury’s Griffin DeVivo (No. 15 at 138) and Newtown’s Fisher Stites (No. 16 at 165) are also seeded in the tournament.

Wrestling begins Saturday morning at 8:30 a.m. and can be viewed on FloWrestling. Other wrestlers from Xavier, Danbury, Newtown, Simsbury and New Fairfield are expected to participate in the tournament.

On Sunday, championship quarterfinals begin at 8:30 a.m. with semifinals at 11:30 a.m. The finals, which include the third place, fifth place and seventh place bouts going on at the same time, begin at 3:15 p.m.

Shabazz took fifth at 106 pounds in 2022 in the tournament. The best finish for a Connecticut boy in the tournament was Danbury’s Ryan Jack, who was fourth at 126 pounds in 2018.
