With two champions and seven finalists, Sacred Heart wins at ESU Open

With two individual champions and seven finalists, No. 5 Sacred Heart won their first tournament by capturing the East Stroudsburg Open freestyle tournament Sunday in East Stroudsburg, Pa.

Three other teams in the top 10 of the National Wrestling Coaches Association preseason poll were in the tournament along with high school powerhouse Wyoming Seminary.

In her first match for the Pioneers, Love Daly won the 170 pound title, going 4-0 and beating All-American teammate Cara Broadus (Plymouth) in the title match. Junior Madison Sandquist also went 4-0 and won a championship at 155 pounds with a pin over teammate Tayla Tildsley. Sandquist won her fourth collegiate tournament with the win.

Sacred Heart beat No. 2 King University of Bristol, Tenn., by a score of 58-46. Wyoming Seminary was third with 26 points, followed by No. 7 East Stroudsburg with 25 and No. 6 Gannon University with 15.

Ashia Torees (109), Temi Sanusi (143) and Madeline Hodge (191) each finished second with Veronica Whitacre (136) taking third place. Sacred Heart did have multiple wrestlers in some weight classes.

Sacred Heart returns to action on Sunday, Nov. 12, when they travel to Iowa to face the Hawkeyes, Presbyterian College and Lindenwood University in the Trailblazer Duals beginning at 11 a.m.
