Key victories on two mats away from the spotlight of the championship finals helped the Trumbull High wrestling team win their first state championship with a 3½-point win over East Hartford Saturday at the Class LL championship meet in Trumbull.
Trumbull outlasted East Hartford, 181-177½ with Danbury finishing third with 172½ points. The Eagles finished second in Class LL twice in 2019 and 2013.
In the final round, the championship mat is center stage with the third place and fifth place bouts on the outside. But the Eagles went 4-0 with wins on those outer mats.
Lucas Cylwik (285), Aethan Munden (195) and Warren Little (170) each finished third with Oscar Rodriguez (106) finishing fifth. Munden won in OT while Little picked up two bonus points for winning with a pin.
“We wrestled over our heads and everybody contributed,” Trumbull coach Charlie Anderson told GameTimeCT’s David Stewart. “We got points from every single person on the team and that’s what you’ve got to do to win this.”
For Anderson, the Hall of Fame coach, it was his first state championship in a coaching career that began in Norwalk. He became a head coach in Norwalk in 1991.
Trumbull had two finalists with Sam Lapham (152) and Mike Gianetti (220) each finishing second.
A year ago, East Hartford won a share of their first Class LL title with Danbury. This year, the Hornets had five finalists and three individual champions. Isaac Quiles (120) and Drayvn Roberts (160) each won their second straight Class LL title while Jaeckez Mendez (138) won his first.
Yaxier Rivera (145) finished second in a 4-2 loss to Brien McMahon’s Zavier Hernandez while Norwalk’s Brendan Gilchrist (195) won his second straight Class LL title with an 11-4 win over East Hartford’s Sammy Montovani.
Danbury finished third for the first time since 2014. But the Hatters got state championship victories from Cristian Pote (106), Dominic Iaquinto (182) and Nun Ajdinoski (285). For Iaquinto and Ajdinoski, it was back-to-back titles. Ajdinoski topped Fairfield Prep’s Malachi Mercer-Robinson in three OT, 3-2.
The Gilchrist brothers – Ryan and Brendan – won state titles with Ryan winning at 170 pounds and Brendan prevailing at 195 pounds. They become the 21st set of brothers to win state titles on the same day.
Fairfield Warde finished fourth (158½) with three individual champions – Owen Sheiman (113) Dominick Spadaro (126) and Nehemias Pettway (220), who was named the tournament’s most outstanding wrestler with three pins. A reversal with 1:18 remaining in the match gave Shieman a 4-2 win over New Britain’s Cameron Cardona.
For the second consecutive week, Spadaro and Norwalk’s Phoenix Gardella went to overtime with Spadaro getting a two-point takedown to win the state title with a 4-2 victory. A week ago, it was Gardella with a 6-4 win in OT at the FCIAC championship meet.
Two girls earned medals in the tournament. Brien McMahon’s Calli Gilchrist finished fourth at 113 pounds after dropping a 4-2 decision in overtime to Ryan Laing of Norwalk. Stamford’s Samantha Yap finished sixth at 106 pounds.
Killingly wins another Class S title
KILLINGLY, Feb. 18, 2023 – With three individual champions and four finalists, No. 10 Killingly won their second Class S title since 2020 with an 11-point win over New Fairfield, 213½ to 202½ points.
The Rebels had four individual champions and had their best finish since taking third in Class M in 2016. Joe Mahoney (120) and Doug Traynor (285) won their second straight Class S titles. Thomas Bock (145) and Vincent Tripaldi (126) also won for New Fairfield.
Killingly had nine wrestlers earn medals by finishing in the top six of their respective weight class led by state champions Ian Cathell (113), Kaden Ware (132) and Jack Richardson (152).
Richardson won his second straight Class S title while Ware won his third Class S championship. Ware lost a chance at winning four state titles when the 2021 season was cancelled by the COVID-19 pandemic.
It was the sixth state title for Killingly and second in Class S. Killingly won four Class M titles from 2003-19.
Windham, which won the ECC title a week ago, had two individual champions – Malachi Fowler (195) and Yael Garcia-Rodriguez (220) and finished third with 188 points. The Whippets had four wrestlers finish third and one take fourth but it wasn’t enough to catch Killingly.
Lewis Mills freshman Jack Gedney, who won the CCC Tournament two weeks ago, won a Class S title at 106 pounds with two pins and a pair of wins by technical fall.
He became the third Lewis Mills wrestler to win a state title. The last Mills wrestler to win a Class S title was David Soden in 1992. Gedney trains with Simsbury.
With four pins, Nonnewaug’s Jack Wendel (182) won his second straight Class S title and was named the tournament’s most outstanding wrestler. Three of Wendel’s pins were 52 seconds or faster.
Old Lyme’s Hoshena Gemma became just the second girl to earn a spot in the final of a CIAC boys wrestling tournament when she earned a spot in the 113-pound final in the Class S tournament.
Trailing 3-0 in the semifinals to Canton’s Nick Leadbetter, Gemma got a takedown with 1:29 remaining in the third period to cut the lead to one. She got a three-point near fall with 18 seconds left to earn a 5-3 victory. In the finals, Gemma fell to Cathell, 10-5.
The only other girl to make a final was Montville’s Jessica Bennett, who finished second 103 pounds in the Class M tournament in 2009.
No. 1 Xavier dominates in Class L tournament
GUILFORD, Feb. 18, 2023 – With nine finalists and six individual champions, No. 1 Xavier won their third straight Class L championship Saturday.
The Falcons prevailed with 293½ points with No. 2 New Milford finishing second with 269 points, Simsbury grabbing third with 211 points and No. 6 Newtown finishing fourth with 204 points.
Xavier’s Raekwon Shabazz (106) won his second straight Class L title with teammates Braylon Gonzalez (113), Kevin Kasperowski (120), Kyle Levesque (132), Anthony Basile (138), and Charles Weidman (182) also bringing home championships.
New Milford’s Khalil Bourjelli won his second state championship for the Green Wave with a pin in the finals at 160 pounds. Bourjelli won a state title as a freshman at 113 pounds, lost his sophomore season due to the COVID-19 pandemic and got hurt a year ago.
The Green Wave had three wrestlers finish second — Alex Oberc (106), Tynan Lim (132) and Adam Oberc (195) and four wrestlers taking third place — Braden Olmstead (138), Ryder Langlois (145), Brennan Botelho (152), and Christopher Reiss (220).
Newtown had four individual champions. Luca Manfredi (152) won a Class L title for the second straight year with a 3-1 win over Xavier’s Matthew Ferrucci with Nighthawk teammates Marc Maurath (145), Fisher Stites (170) and John DaSilva (285) also winning state titles.
Simsbury’s Griffin Devivo won a state championship at 126 with a 7-4 win over Xavier’s Carl Loria while Trojan teammates Nick Savarese (120) and Chad Mairano (170) each finishing second. Tyler Sinatro took third place.
