For second year, Connecticut Wrestling Online is finalist for national award

For the second consecutive year, Connecticut Wrestling Online was one of five finalists for the Outlet of the Year award from the National Wrestling Media Association.

The National Wrestling Media Association (NWMA) is a national organization of men and women journalists who cover the sport of amateur wrestling. The organization, which began in 1989, includes reporters, editors, publishers, photographers, webmasters, broadcasters and other media professionals.

Intermat won the award for Outlet of the Year for the year 2021-22, it was announced on Wednesday. Other finalists for Outlet of the Year included Fanco Wrestling, WIN (Wrestling Insider) Magazine and WrestleStat.

Originally founded by Tom Owens in 1995, InterMat has been one of the leaders in wrestling communications, journalism and coverage since its inception. The site saw an ownership change in 2021, bringing on Earl Smith as the site editor with previous NWMA Journalist of the Year Willie Saylor overseeing the enterprise.

Since Smith and Saylor have had control at InterMat, they have assembled a large contingent of experienced journalists and up-and-coming writers to help inject new life into the website.

Connecticut Wrestling Online has been in operation since January 2001 and has been covering high school wrestling in the state since that time. Over the years, the website has expanded its coverage to include how Connecticut athletes are doing at the collegiate level, at national-caliber tournaments and in international competitions.

In 2018, the website took over the top 10 high school wrestling poll after the long-time sponsor of the poll.

Shawn Kennedy of ESPN, ACC Network and United World Wrestling was named the Broadcaster of the Year with Levi Venture of BehindTheShot.TV and the Pennsylvania RTC named photographer of the year.

Intermat’s Earl Smith was named journalist of the year with Bloodround named as podcast of the year. Iowa’s Chris Brewer was named the Division I Sports Information Director of the Year with Augsburg University’s Don Stoner named as Small College Sports Information Director of the Year.
