ADRIAN, MICH. – It was another successful day in Michigan for the No. 13 Sacred Heart women’s wrestling team. Thanks to a pair of finalists, the Pioneers finished fourth at the Adrian Open on Sunday.
Sacred Heart produced 107½ points for the fourth-place finish. No. 1 North Central won with a team score of 422½ with Indiana Tech coming in a distance second with 234 points.
Pioneer rookie Aaliyah Payne-Parris finished second at 101 pounds. She started with a pair of wins by technical fall (10-0), including one over the No. 2 seed, Elmira’s Skylynn Tomlinson. Payne-Parris pinned Indiana Tech’s Makayla Young in three minutes before losing to Young’s teammate Sydney Kutzke, 8-4, in the finals.
It took the No. 1 wrestler at 130 pounds to stop Sacred Heart’s Alexandra Fitzgerald in the finals. Fitzgerald made her way to the championship bout thanks to three pins, including the semifinals where she broke a 6-6 tie with Gannon’s Lana Perez. Her run was stopped by top-ranked Cameron Guerin of McKendree by pin in 0:36.
Sacred Heart’s Madison Sandquist (155) lost a narrow 5-4 decision to third-ranked Nyla Burgess in her second match at 155 pounds but won her last three to take the consolation championship. Also working her way back through the consolation bracket was Jacklyn Smith at 170. Smith lost her second match in the main draw, but rebounded with two pins and a decision to win the consolation bracket.
Nohea Moniz bounced back from a quarterfinal loss at 116 pounds to come back to take seventh. She pinned Trine’s Riley Morrison in 2:41 in the seventh-place game. After falling in her first bout of 116 points, Tati Walker rebounded with a pair of pins before falling to Carleigh Czerneski from Adrian College in the consolation A final.
Also earning seventh place was Julia Mullane (136). A pin and decision advanced her to the quarterfinals. She lost in her first consolation bout but took seventh thanks to an injury forfeit. At 109 pounds, freshman Ahsia Torres placed eighth. She started by pinning Elmira’s Kaitlyn Potter in 1:57. She lost to Kendra Ryan of North Central, 10-0, but came back in the consolation bracket to beat Ryan, 8-2. Torres was pinned by McKendree’s Samantha Kruize in the seventh-place bout.
Sacred Heart is back on the mat next weekend for the Missouri Valley College Open, November 18-19.
