Fitzgerald takes eighth at Missouri Valley Open to lead Sacred Heart

Sacred Heart’s Alexandra Anderson finished eighth at the Missouri Valley Open on Sunday, Nov. 20.

Sacred Heart freshman Alexandra Fitzgerald finished eighth at 130 pounds to lead the Pioneers at the Missouri Valley Open in Marshall, Missouri on Sunday.

There were 495 wresters from 45 different teams including three national championship teams from a year ago – McKendree (NCAA), Campbellsville (NAIA) and Indian Hills (junior college) along with 10 wrestlers who have participated in wrestling at the international level.

Five wrestlers from Iowa, wrestling unattached, won individual titles.

Fitzgerald, ranked No.7 in the country at 130, began the tournament in dominant fashion, posting a 12-1 tech fall over Grand View’s Isabella Gonzalez before pinning Jennifer Soto from McKendree in 5:22. Ranked seventh in the nation, she added a 4-2 decision against Emily Paulino from Midland but was pinned by Simon Fraser’s Marquesi Haintz. Fitzgerald lost a 10-5 decision to Nichole Moore in the seventh-place match.

Sacred Heart’s Madison Sandquist started her day with a pin of Leah Brown in 2:40 at 155 pounds. She followed that with pin of Olivia Pizano in just 87 seconds. Ranked eighth nationally, Sandquist’s run was stopped in a tough 8-7 loss to Campbellsville’s Randi Robison.

Also collecting a pair of wins on day two was Sacred Heart’s Ahsia Torres (109). She stopped Emmanuel’s Dinayah Vazquez with a 12-1 tech fall. Torres dropped Koirgan Wilkey from Indiana Tech with a pin in 1:59, but couldn’t get past Southern Oregon’s Natalie Reyna-Rodriguez.

At 116 pounds, Sacred Heart’s Nohea Moniza pinned Kory Phillips from Life University in 4:12, but was pinned herself in 1:37 by Alexis Medina.

The Pioneers are back in action December 3 at the Northeast Duals.
