Former Enfield wrestling coach Joe Andrychowski has passed away

Joe Andrychowski, the longtime coach of the wrestling program in Enfield, died at the age of 78 on August 5 after a courageous battle with cancer.

Andrychowski taught in the Enfield school system for 35 years. He developed the wrestling program at John F. Kennedy Middle School where the Patriots went 89-2 over nine years.

Many wrestlers from the JFK program continued to succeed on the mat at the high school level with 18 wrestlers winning state championships with Enfield High and two wrestlers winning state titles with Fermi. Three former JFK wrestlers won State Open titles for Enfield High.

Andrychowski was also an assistant coach of the Enfield High wrestling team (1982-86, 1990) and helped lead Enfield to a CIAC Class L state championship in wrestling in 1984. The Raiders, as they called at that time, finished second in Class L in 1982 and 1983.

He was also an assistant football coach at JFK Middle School (1971-82) and Enfield High (1982-86) along with being a volunteer golf coach at Enfield (1982-92) and Fermi (1992-95).

He was inducted into the Enfield High Athletic Hall of Fame in 2014.
