Three state wrestlers win New England titles; Xavier finishes second

Fairfield Warde’s Will Ebert, left, didn’t give up a single point in winning a New England championship Saturday in Providence.

Three Connecticut wrestlers won New England championships on Saturday and No. 1 Xavier finished second at the 2022 New England wrestling championships at the Providence Career and Technical Academy.

Saint John’s Prep of Danvers, Mass., had two individual champions and three finalists to win their first New England championship and become the first Bay State team to bring home a New England title since Lowell in 2007.

Killingly’s Jack Richardson (145), Fairfield Warde’s Will Ebert (170) and Guilford’s Chris Murphy (195) each won New England titles while Xavier’s Jackson Heslin (120), New Milford’s Evan Lindner (126), Simsbury’s Zach Jones (152) and Norwalk’s Brendan Gilchrist (195) each finished second.

Xavier, which won their first State Open title since 2012 a week ago, had three medalists – Heslin at 120, Thomas Lunt (220), who finished fifth and Kyle Levesque (126), who finished sixth. The Falcons had 82 points but St. John’s Prep, which won the Massachusetts’ All-State tournament a week ago, had 95 to win the title. Fairfield Warde was fifth with 58 points with Danbury (54) finishing sixth and Killingly (53) finishing seventh.

It was the highest finish ever in the tournament for Xavier and Killingly.

Richardson battled to win his first New England championship. He outlasted Rhode Island champion Andrew Reall of Ponagansett in the quarterfinals, 6-4. Richardson got an escape to open up the third period and extend his lead to three points. He gave up a takedown with two seconds remaining.

Killingly’s Jack Richardson, right, won close matches to win his first New England championship Saturday in Providence.

In the semifinals, he outlasted Danbury’s Logan Kovacs, 5-3 in double overtime. Kovacs took a 3-2 lead with an escape with 1:56 remaining in the third period but was penalized for stalling with 13 seconds left. In the second overtime, Richardson got a reversal with six seconds left to secure the win.

In the final, Richardson took an 8-3 lead late in the second period over Massachusetts champion Mark Botello of Hingham. Trailing by two, Richardson got an escape, a takedown and a four-point near fall to take an 8-3 lead. Richardson ended up winning, 8-6.

Ebert was simply dominant in winning at 170 pounds. He didn’t give up a point in the entire tournament had one pin and beat two state champions.

Ebert blanked Vermont state champion Gil Stawinski of Essex, 8-0 in the semifinals and won his first New England title with a 9-0 win over Maine champion Jackson Sutherland of Mattanawcook Academy in Lincoln, Maine, 9-0.

At 196 pounds, Murphy outlasted Gilchrist to win his first New England championship. Both wrestlers had three pins to earn their spots in the final. Murphy pinned the Maine champion, Dillon Worster of Oxford Hills, in the semifinals while Gilchrist pinned the Massachusetts champion, Dennis Cha, and Vermont champion, Kam Cyr.

Thanks to a first period escape, Murphy held a 1-0 lead late in the third period. Trying to make something happen, Gilchrist gambled, turned the wrong way Murphy pounced on him to pin him in 5:59.

At 120 pounds, Rhode Island champion Jacob Joyce of Ponaganset pinned Xavier’s Jackson Heslin in 4:39 to win a New England championship.

In the 126 pound final, Tyler Know of Saint John’s Prep got a quick reversal to open the third period that helped him beat New Milford’s Evan Lindner, 3-1.

Massachusetts champion Rawson Iwanicki of Saint John’s Prep (58-0) won the championship at 152 pounds when Simsbury’s Zach Jones had to retire with six seconds left in the second period with a shoulder injury. The match was tied at 5-5 at the time

Johns looked good throughout the tournament. He had a 31 second pin in his first match, beat Lucien Perla of Nashoba Valley (MA) in the quarterfinals, 13-2, and blanked Rhode Island champion Justin Hood of Ponagansett in the semifinals, 7-0.

Danbury’s Kai O’Dell (138) and Fairfield Prep’s Connor Smith (182) finished third while New Fairfield’s Joe Mahoney (106), Canton’s Ethan Titus (120), Killingly’s Kaden Ware (126) and Newtown’s Fisher Stites (160) each finished fourth.
