Xavier remains No. 1 in state top 10 poll

Xavier, which closed out the dual meet portion of the 2021-22 season with wins over Hand-Madison and Vermont power Mt. Anthony Union, remains the No. 1 team in the Connecticut Wrestling Online top 10 poll as voted by state coaches and selected media members. The Falcons received 16 of 17 votes for the top spot. East Hartford received one first place vote.

The top seven teams in the poll remained the same as it was a week earlier. Berlin, after finishing second in the Central Connecticut Conference tournament, jumped into the top 10 for the first time this season at No. 8. The Redcoats (14-1) tied for No. 8 in the poll with SWC champion New Milford (6-1).

The Green Wave won their second straight SWC title and the 13th in 15 years with a 181½ to 171 win over Newtown. Eight wrestlers medaled for New Milford.

In the closest finish this century at the FCIAC championship tournament, No. 2 Danbury beat No. 3 Fairfield Warde by 3½ points to capture another league championship. The Mustangs finished 20-1, the most wins for Warde in a single season since going 21-2 in 2015.

No. 4 Simsbury (14-2) closed out the dual meet season with a win over Farmington to capture the CCC West title and won the CCC Tournament a few days later. No. 5 East Hartford (20-0) finished undefeated for the first time after ending the dual meet season with a win over Manchester.

No. 6 Branford (24-1) led the state in dual meet victories this season, falling two wins shy of the school record of 26 set in 2020. No. 7 Staples (14-2) finished third at the FCIAC Tournament.

No. 10 Haddam-Killingworth (16-5) slipped two spots after splitting two dual meets last week. The Cougars beat Lyman Memorial/Windham Tech but then were upset by CCC East champion RHAM (19-1), 45-33.

The final poll of this season will be conducted after the State Open championships. There will be no poll next week.
