Xavier remains No. 1 in latest Connecticut Wrestling Online top 10 poll

With six individual champions, East Hartford won the Greater Hartford Open Saturday and moved up to No. 5 in the latest Connecticut Wrestling Online top 10 poll. One of the champions was Jaeckez Mendez, who battles Bristol Central’s Landon Dionne in the finals at 138 pounds.

After their impressive third place finish at The War on the Shore tournament in Maryland over the weekend, Xavier remains the unanimous choice as the No. 1 team in the latest Connecticut Wrestling Online top 10 poll.

Thanks to a five-point move in the final seconds, No. 2 Danbury beat FCIAC rival Fairfield Warde by one point last week, 35-34, and the Hatters (4-1) remain No. 2 in the poll with Fairfield Warde (5-1) remaining at No. 3.

No. 4 Simsbury won the John D. Gorman Memorial tournament in Cumberland, R.I. for the second consecutive time while East Hartford (6-0) won the Greater Hartford Open for the first time since 2005 and leaped up five spots to No. 5.

A win in the final match of the day lifted Staples (7-0) to a 37-33 win over Foran to win the John Chacho Duals in Westport over the weekend. It also lifted the Wreckers back into the top 10 at No. 6. Foran (10-1) slips one spot to No. 7 after their first loss of the season.

New Fairfield (7-0), which won four matches this past weekend, is No. 8, while Killingly, who was fourth at the Greater Hartford Open slipped four spots to No. 9. Newtown (8-1) rounds out the top 10.
