For the first time in six years, there is a new No. 1 team in the state top 10 wrestling poll.

Xavier is the unanimous selection as the No. 1 team in the state in Connecticut Wrestling Online’s top 10 poll after the Falcons beat then-No. 1 Danbury on Saturday in Middletown, 44-19. The Falcons (6-1) received all 15 first place votes with Danbury (3-1) finishing second.

Danbury has been the top team in the top 10 poll each week since the first week in 2015-16. Newtown was the No. 1 team in the preseason poll in December 2015 but the Hatters took over the top spot in week 1. It’s the first time that Xavier is No. 1 since the Falcons spent two weeks on top of the poll in February 2015.

Fairfield Warde (5-0) didn’t wrestle last week due to concerns with the increase in COVID-19 infections but the Mustangs remained No. 3 in the poll. Saturday’s Fairfield Warde Invitational was cancelled.

Simsbury (3-2) remained at No. 4 with undefeated Killingly (9-0) at No. 5. Killingly finished second at the Casey Dane Yates Memorial tournament at Lyman Memorial. Foran (7-0), which won five matches last week, remains No. 6.

New Fairfield (2-0) jumped into the top 10 at No. 7 after its half point win over New Milford in Saturday’s Bristol Central Invitational. It is the first top 10 appearance for the Rebels since the final poll of the 2016 season.

New Milford also joined the top 10 at No. 8. The Green Wave have a pair of top three finishes in their two tournaments. New Milford was third at the Chaves Invitational in Simsbury in December.

Newtown (4-0) was idle this week and is ranked No. 9. East Hartford (5-0) won four matches at the South Windsor Classic Duals but the Hornets slipped two spots to No. 10.
