State wrestlers win medals at Tulsa Nationals

TULSA, Okla., Jan. 15, 2022 – Ten wrestlers from Connecticut earned medals at the 67th annual Tulsa Nationals sponsored by the World of Wrestling this past weekend.

Simsbury’s Max Konopka won at 160 pounds in the 12-and-under division. Representing Ascension Athletics out of Bristol, Konopka went 3-0 in the tournament and won the title with a 3-0 decision over Brydon Feister of Ohio. Konopka’s brother, Jaxson, was fifth in at 75 pounds in the 8-and-under division.

Six wrestlers from South Side Wrestling Club in Bridgeport earned medals in the tournament led by Milford’s Kayla Batres, who was second at 90 pounds in the girls 15-and-under division.

Jeremy McGrath of Milford was third at 96 pounds in the 12-and-under division.

Other medalwinners from South Side included Norwalk’s Carlo Tucci, who was fourth at 145 in the 15-and-under division and Norwalk’s Mike Marini (200, 15U), Milford’s Karina Batres (57, 9U) and Milford’s Gabe Batres (46, 6U), who each finished sixth.

Killingly’s Cole Lemovitz of Mayo Quanchi Judo in Coventry, R.I., went 5-2 and was sixth at 73 pounds in the 12-and-under division. Newtown’s Bright Karvoski of Refinery went 4-2 and was sixth at 80 pounds in 12-and-under.

Wrestlers in the top six of their respective weight class earned Tulsa National All-American honors.
