Late surge lifts No. 2 Danbury past No. 3 Fairfield Warde, 35-34

FAIRFIELD, January 14, 2022 – No. 2 Danbury won the final three matches to slip past No. 3 Fairfield Warde, 35-34 in a hotly-contested FCIAC match on Friday night.

Trailing by 13 points with three matches remaining, Danbury’s Logan Kovacs (145) won by pin to cut the lead to seven points. Danbury’s Kai O’Dell (152) got three takedowns in the final 40 seconds to win by technical fall and earn five points, trimming the Mustang lead to two, 34-32.

In the final match, Danbury’s Liam Bryne outlasted Warde’s Lucas Coleman, 7-6 to give the Hatters the one-point victory. Trailing by four, Bryne got a two-point reversal and three-point near fall in the final 10 seconds of the match to get the win and give the Hatters the victory.

With the win, Danbury (5-1) extends their winning streak against FCIAC opponents to 431 matches. The last time the Hatters fell to a league opponent was in 1986 when they fell to Greenwich.

Danbury picked up key pins from Dominic Iaquinto (195), Nun Ajdinoski (285) and Jesse Defonce (132). Deydon Soto (106) had a crucial 6-4 win over Fairfield Warde’s Owen Sherman thanks to three takedowns.

Nehemias Pettway (220) picked up a 3-1 decision at 220 pounds for the host Mustangs (6-1) while Dominick Spadaro (113), Ben Zukerman (120) and James Dean (138) had pins for Warde. Dean’s pin gave Warde a 34-21 lead with three matches remaining.
