No. 11 Sacred Heart picked up another two wins as the women’s wrestling program hosted their first-ever dual meet on Monday at the Pitt Center in Fairfield.

The Pioneers erased a 16-point deficit and scored 23 unanswered points to beat Elmira College, 23-16 in the first-ever women’s dual meet at home. In the second match, Sacred Heart (3-1) beat No. 14 New Jersey City University for the second time in a week with a 25-15 victory. The Pioneers scored the final 25 points of the match to secure the win.

Sacred Heart won three of the four matches contested against Elmira (2-5) with Savannah Vanse of NFA (136) picking up a 10-point victory, No. 5 Madison Sandquist beating Skylah Chakouian, 8-4 and Jacklyn Smith of Trumbull (170) pinning Hazel Dahlquist in 31 seconds. It was third pin of the season for Smith and her fastest to date.

New Jersey City had a 15-0 lead thanks to two forfeits and a NJCU pin but Vanse got the Pioneers (136) on the board with a forfeit. Tays Pascual (143) pinned New Jersey City’s Lockslea Mayers for the second time in a week to cut the lead to 15-11.

Sandquist picked up her seventh pin of the season by putting Patience Hevi on the mat in 1:02 to give the Pioneers at 16-15 advantage. Smith picked up a forfeit at 170 and No. 6 Ashley Reed of Southington pinned No. 7 Sandy Guerrero at 191 pounds in 1:35 to secure the victory.

Reed improved to 4-0 with three pins in dual meets while Sandquist is 3-1 with one pin. Vanese is also 3-1 in dual meets. It was the only scheduled dual meet of the season at home for Sacred Heart.

The Pioneers are off for the Christmas holiday and will return to action January 8 when they travel to Delaware Valley in Doylestown, Pa., to face the Rams and NJCU.
