Two Connecticut wrestlers won championships at The Citadel Open in Charleston, S.C. on Saturday.
Wrestling for North Carolina State, Danbury’s Ryan Jack won his first collegiate tournament at 141 pounds. Jack was 4-0 with three bonus point wins and outscoring his foes 34-11 with a pin. He opened with a 13- major decision followed by a pin. In the semifinals it was a 11-7 decision, followed by a 10-2 major decision in the final.
In a battle of N.C. State freshmen in the final, Danbury’s A.J. Kovacs scored a 9-8 decision over Ed Scott in the final. Kovacs won all five of his matches, outscoring his foes 55-11. He opened with back-to-back tech falls (17-1, 16-0) before a 3-1 win and 10-3 win in the semifinals.
At the Southeast Open in Salem, Virginia, Simsbury freshman Ty Finn of Virginia Tech (157) finished fourth in his first collegiate tournament. Finn wrestled the NCAA match limit, going 5-2 with four wins ending with bonus points.
