New England wrestling event begins Saturday in New Hampshire

Wrestling opportunities have been rare in New England this winter thanks to the COVID-19 pandemic with scholastic wrestling cancelled in Connecticut, Vermont and Maine. Massachusetts and Rhode Island delayed high school wrestling until the spring while New Hampshire schools had a limited dual meet schedule this winter.

In the next two weeks, wrestlers will have the opportunity to compete in two regional events. Spartan Combat is hosting a New England championship meet this weekend in Hampstead, N.H, while the National High School Coaches Association (NHSCA) will be hosting their 32nd annual national championship event on April 23-25 in Virginia Beach, Virginia.

The sold out Spartan Combat New England meet is the first large high school wrestling event to be held during the pandemic and begins Saturday at the PhanZone Sports Center in Hampstead, a 70,000 square foot facility used for a variety of indoor events – normally indoor soccer, football, lacrosse and field hockey.

Five Connecticut wrestlers earned No. 1 seeds in their respective weight classes with three were seeded No. 2. The event will be broadcast live over FloWrestling beginning at 9 a.m. on Saturday.

Three sessions will be held Saturday to minimize the number of people in the building. Athletes in weight classes from 170 to 285 will compete from 9-11:30 a.m. in session one. Athletes in weight classes 98 to 126 will compete in session 2 from noon to 3 p.m. and athletes in weight classes 132 to 160 will compete in session 3 from 3:30 p.m. to 7 p.m.

Semifinals will be held Sunday from 9-11 a.m. with the medal round from noon to 3 p.m.

All wrestlers, coaches and parents will be required to wear masks when not wrestling, All people entering the building will be required to have a temperature check before entering the facility and will need to sign out a waiver.

Trumbull’s Michael Longo (106), Stratford’s Nico Provo (120), New Canaan’s Justin Mastroianni (145), Glastonbury’s Dominic Rossetti (152) and Danbury’s D.J. Donovan (220) earned No. 1 seeds while Simsbury’s Ty Finn (152), New Milford’s Khalil Bourjelli (145) and West Hartford’s Drew Currier (126) are seeded No. 2.

In most cases, the wrestlers will be representing their respective club teams.

In two weeks, the NHSCA will host their respective national events with championship tournaments in Virginia Beach at the senior, junior, sophomore, freshman and middle school levels. There is also a division for high school girls.

The limit of wrestlers at the NHSCA event is 900 each for the junior and sophomore tournaments, 500 each for the senior and freshman tournament, 450 for the middle school tournament and 150 for the girls tournament.

The top eight finishers in each weight class will earn All-American honors at the NHSCA event.
