GORHAM, Maine, March 6, 2021 – No. 3 Coast Guard had five pins and won eight of 10 matches to close out their dual meet campaign with a 41-12 victory over Southern Maine on Saturday.
It was just the second dual meet of this pandemic-shortened season for the Bears but it gave them an opportunity to wrestle someone else as they prepare for next weekend’s National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) Division III national championship meet in Coralville, Iowa.
The NCAA cancelled each of their Division III championship tournaments in all sports, including wrestling, on February 3. There will be no team awards at the NWCA championship meet – just individual awards.
Coast Guard has two wrestlers that are ranked No. 1 in their respective weight classes – Paul Detwiler (174) and Jon Wagner (197). Both are returning NWCA All-American selections and both won by pin on Saturday.
Detwiler pinned Southern Maine freshman Colton DeLeo (Masuk/Monroe) in 1:13 while Wagner pinned Nick Beebe in 1:24.
Coast Guard’s Noah Caskey, a sophomore from Montville, won by pin at 149 pounds in 3:23 while Bear teammates A.J. Pagliarulo (141) and David McCullough (184) also had pins. Pagliarulo beat freshman Justin Beiler from Enfield in Beiler’s first collegiate start.
Coast Guard’s Phil Rogers (165) won by tech fall while Tony Ulaszek (157) earned a 6-5 win in overtime for his first collegiate win. Parker Brunkala (125) began the match for Coast Guard with a victory.
