WESTPORT, July 6, 2020 — The Staples High wrestling team was honored as the team of the week by the CIAC and the Hartford Athletic pro soccer team.
Students from the Wreckers squad raised $3,000 to help assistant coach Alex Kappel provide meals and supplies for some of Kappel’s students and their families in Bridgeport during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Staples was 22-5 last winter and finished third at the FCIAC Tournament. The Wreckers took sixth at the CIAC Class LL championships.
Any high school program including sports, eSports, theater, robotics and band are eligible to be nominated. Winning programs will be selected based on community engagement and competitive excellence.
The Staples wrestlers will be recognized at a future Hartford Athletic match.
