Two Connecticut high school wrestling teams went undefeated this season – New England champion Danbury and Class L champion Xavier-Middletown.
Connecticut Wrestling Online has posted the final 2019-20 standings, as compiled from reported results.
Danbury coach Ricky Shook tries to challenge his team every year and sets up a tough dual meet and tournament schedule.
In the past three years, the Hatters have lost five dual meets – each to out-of-state schools, Timberlane Regional (Plaistow, N.H.), Mount Anthony Union (Bennington, Vt.) and Nashoba Valley Tech (Westford, Mass.). Danbury hasn’t dropped a dual meet to a Connecticut school since 2015 when they lost to Xavier and New Milford.
But this year, no one was able to beat Danbury (16-0) in a dual meet. The Hatters beat Timberlane, Mt. Anthony and Nashoba Valley this winter along with victories over Simsbury, Fairfield Warde, New Milford and Trumbull – schools that each finished in the top 10 of the final Connecticut Wrestling Online poll.
The Hatters also swept the FCIAC championship, the Class LL tournament and the State Open before capturing the New England title for the second straight year. Danbury was voted No. 1 in the final Connecticut Wrestling Online top 10 poll of the season.
It’s the first undefeated season for the Hatters since 2016. Danbury (16-0) extended their own state record with their 12th undefeated season. Conard is second with nine undefeated seasons and Avon is third with four.
Xavier (8-0) finished undefeated for the first time in school history. The Falcons wrestled their normal, assigned schedule in the Southern Connecticut Conference but spent weekends traveling around the region to challenging tournaments to get ready for the postseason.
Coach Mike Cunningham’s Falcons won four tournaments during the regular season along with the SCC Tournament championship and the Class L championship, where Xavier outlasted Simsbury by 2½ points to win their first state title since 2012.
Xavier won the Mid-Hudson Classic in Arlington, New York in late December against a field of all New York state teams. In early January, the Falcons were third at the SWAT tournament in Sanford, Maine, which was won by Danbury. Xavier won their own Colter Abely tournament on Jan. 18 in Middletown, captured the Methuen, Mass., Invitational on February 1 against a tough field of Massachusetts and New Hampshire teams and took the Bobcat Classic title at Bacon Academy on February 8.
Five teams had one loss this season including Branford (26-1), Fairfield Warde (19-1), Simsbury (14-1), Bristol Eastern (12-1) and Northwestern (9-1). Xavier handed Branford their only loss while Danbury beat Fairfield Warde and Simsbury.
