WORCESTER – Two nationally-ranked wrestlers picked up early pins as No. 11 Coast Guard won their first dual meet of the season with a 29-12 win over WPI on Wednesday night.
Detwiler (Fleming Island, FL), who is ranked No. 6 at 184 pounds in NCAA Division III, and Patrick Irwin, who is ranked No. 4 at 285 pounds, each had pins as Coast Guard race out to a 15-0 lead after three matches.
Detwiler opened the match by pinning WPI’s Adam March in 2:08. Teammate Jon Wagner, who is ranked No. 5 at 197, beat Tyler Riggs, 6-2, before Irwin won by pin as Coast Guard race out to a 15-0 lead.
Montville freshman Noah Caskey (141) picked up a 10-5 victory for Coast Guard.
For WPI, Fairfield’s Chase Lind picked up a win for the Engineers with a pin at 157 pounds.
