Two American women won gold medals on Thursday at the Pan Am Games in Lima, Peru, in freestyle wrestling competition.
Sarah Hildebrandt (53 kg, 116 pounds), who didn’t give up a point in three matches, and Whitney Conder (50 kg, 110 pounds) won gold medals for the United States while Jenna Burket (57 kg, 125) dropped a 2-1 decision in the finals to bring home a silver medal.
Hildebrandt, who won a silver medal at the 2018 Senior World Championships, won gold with a 10-0 technical fall victory over Betzabeth Arguello Villegas of Venezuela. Outscoring her opponents 28-0, Hildebrandt beat Carolina Castillo Hidalgo of Colombia (8-0) in the semifinal and Kamila Barbosa of Brazil (10-0) in the first round.
Conder beat Cuba’s Yusneylis Guzman Lopez in the finals, 10-2 to win her second Pan Am Games gold medal. She also won in 2015 in Toronto. Conder got three first period takedowns to take control of the bout. Conder outscored her three opponents in the tournament, 30-2.
Burkett looked sharp in her first two matches overwhelmed Nicaragua’s Paula Ramirez with a 10-0 tech fall in 24 seconds. She showed no signs of slowing down in the semifinals with an 11-0 victory.
However in the finals, Ecuador’s Lissette Antes Castillo came away with a 2-1 decision.
