East Haven wins 15th match; New Milford’s Ortiz is ranked nationally at No. 9

EAST HAVEN, January 15, 2019 – With six pins, East Haven won their 15th match of the season with a Southern Connecticut Conference win over Fairfield Prep on Tuesday, 50-21. East Haven improves to 15-3 and 2-0 in the SCC’s A Division.

New Milford High senior Joanne Ortiz is ranked No. 9 in the nation in the latest high school national girls rankings as compiled by the National Wrestling Hall of Fame, USA Wrestling and Flo Wrestling.

Ortiz is the only Connecticut girl that is ranked at this time. The top 20 girls are ranked in each weight class.

Kirk Parker, who coached for 25 years at Enfield High and led the Raiders to two Class L championships in 1979 and 1984, died on Sunday.

Parker coached the Raiders as they were called in those days for 25 years from 1974-99. Not only did Enfield win two state championships but they finished second in Class L in 1982 and 1983. The Raiders also captured CCIL titles in 1979 and 1983 and a CCC East championship in 1985.

Parker, the son of legendary Springfield College coach Doug Parker, had 19 state championship wrestlers with the Raiders and he coached three State Open champions.
