FAIRFIELD, January 26, 2019 – Bucknell University scored their first shutout in three years with a 40-0 victory over Sacred Heart in EIWA action Saturday in Fairfield. The win snapped Sacred Heart’s three-match winning streak.
Bucknell (4-6, 2-3 EIWA) picked up bonus points in five of 10 matches, including three technical falls and a pin. Zach Hartman (157), who has been ranked as high as No. 8 in the nation, won his seventh straight match for Bucknell with a pin. He has pinned three of his last four EIWA opponents.
Sacred Heart (5-3, 1-1 EIWA) was competitive in several matches. At 133, Sacred Heart’s Anthony Petrillo escaped to begin the third period to cut the lead to 2-1. But David Campbell got a takedown with 1:20 left in the match to extend his lead to 4-1 and take control of the match. Campbell won, 6-1.
The closest a Pioneer came to a victory was at 141 when Gerard Daly dropped a 2-0 decision to Joey Gould. The match was scoreless after one period and Gould took a 1-0 lead on a second period escape. But that would be it for the scoring. Gould added another point with riding time.
At 165, Sacred Heart’s Brandon Levesque (Portland) escaped from a restart with 40 seconds left in the third period to cut the lead to 7-5. But Bucknell’s D.J. Hollingshead got a takedown with 12 seconds remaining to clinch a 10-5 victory.
At 285, Dante DelBonis took a 5-4 lead with 1:05 left in the second period on an escape but Brandon Stokes got a takedown to grab a 6-5 advantage with 17 seconds left in the second period. A third period escape and takedown by Stokes clinched the 9-5 win over DelBonis.
Bucknell improves to 7-0 in the all-time series with Sacred Heart with three shutouts. The two previous shutouts by the Bison were in 2012 (51-0) and in 2016 (39-0).
The Pioneers are back in action on Friday, February 1 at 6 p.m., when they host Binghamton as part of the inaugural VolleyBrawl event. The Sacred Heart men’s volleyball team will host Purdue-Fort Wayne after the wrestling match.
