Broadus earns 4th All-American medal at nationals

FARGO, North Dakota, July 19 – Plymouth’s Cara Broadus became the most decorated Connecticut female wrestler at the USA Wrestling Cadet and Junior national championship tournament on Wednesday.

Broadus earned her fourth career USA Wrestling All-American medal by taking fifth in the women’s freestyle competition at 112 pounds. She ties the state record established by Simsbury’s Joey Martin, who earned four All-American medals from 2003-05.

Broadus went 4-2 on the day in the women’s freestyle, winning her first three matches before being defeated by Pennsylvania’s Amanda Walker in the semifinals by technical fall, 11-0. Broadus had two pins and a tech fall.

Broadus went 1-1 in the consolation bracket, beating Sariyah Jones of California to finish fifth with a 10-0 win by technical fall.

Earlier this week, Broadus became the first girl from Connecticut to win a USA Wrestling national championship when she won the Cadet freestyle tournament at 115 pounds. She also earned All-American honors in the Cadet and Junior freestyle tournaments last summer.

Seventeen Connecticut wrestlers competed in the Cadet Greco Roman tournament and the Junior Greco Roman tournament.

Trumbull’s Matt Ryan (6-2) won six consecutive consolation round matches at 113 pounds in the Cadet Greco Roman tournament and fell one victory shy of earning All-American honors. Ryan began the day with a one-point loss to Hawaii’s Issac Stalcup, 14-13. Trailing by five after one period, a 10-6 surge in the second period wasn’t enough.

In the consolation round, Ryan won three straight bouts by technical fall (10 points or more). Ryan remained alive, slipping past Austin Almauger of Washington state, 5-4. Eventually, Ryan was eliminated by Minnesota’s Colby Njos, getting pinned in 3:52.

State wrestlers with multiple wins in the Cadet Greco Roman competition included Killingworth’s Ronan Marino (100), who was 2-2, Tolland’s Michael Angers (138) with a 2-2 record and Xavier’s Ryan Devino (152), who finished with a 3-2 record.

In the Junior Greco-Roman tournament, Newtown’s Joe Accousti (160) was the top state wrestler, going 4-2 and finishing two wins shy of earning All-American status. Accousti had a 17 second pin in the consolation round.

Fairfield Warde’s Timmy Kane (132) went 3-2 with three consecutive wins in the championship bracket while Joel Barlow’s Emmett Licastri (160) went 3-2 as well. Berlin’s Nick Arborio (113) went 2-2 in the tournament.
