Busy day for Connecticut wrestlers at New England championships

LOWELL, Mass., Feb. 29, 2008 — It was a busy day of competition for the wrestlers from Connecticut on day 1 of the New England championships.

Woodstock Academy freshman R.J. LaBeef (103) lost his first match of the year in a 9-3 loss to East Longmeadow’s Chad Roberts, the sixth seed in Massachusetts. … Danbury’s Charlie Costanzo (119) moved into the semifinals with a 3-2 win over New Bedford’s Kennry Francis. … At 125, Windham’s Nick Marouski lost in the quarterfinals to Anthony Medina of Putnam, Mass., 6-5. … New Fairfield’s Mike Frick (130) beat New Hampshire state champion Brandon Paige of Concord, 2-0 to earn a semifinal berth. Griswold’s Tyler Banks (130) outlasted Vermont champion Scott Legacy II, 7-5 in the quarterfinals to improve to 46-0. … Griswold’s Brock Coutu (135) won twice by pins of 1:00 and 1:28 to move into the semifinals. … Ledyard’s C.J. Satti (140) dropped a 2-0 decision to Vermont champion Matt Parisi of Mt. Anthony in the quarterfinals. Amity’s Mike Vernik (140) nipped Dave Clemens of Timberlane NH in the first round, 5-4 before dropping a tight 4-2 decision to Rhode Island champion Jacob Matthews of Middletown, 4-2. … Bethel’s Andrew Ford (152) pinned Vermont champion D.J. Legacy in 1:46 to move into the semis. … Southington’s Trevor Ritchie (171) nipped Rhode Island champion Connor Nelson of South Kingston, 6-4 in the quarterfinals while Westhill’s Ron Thompson (171) beat Lewis Bailey of Chelmsford, Mass., 2-1 in OT to move into the semis. … New Milford’s Cody Griswold (171) nipped New Hampshire champion Eric Petrillo of Timberlane, 5-4 in the quarterfinals. State champion Tim Vollaro (171) of Somers dropped a 4-3 decision in the first round to George Hargrove of Springfield Central. … State champion Reshannon Stanley of Weaver (32-1) won his first match in OT, 3-1 and dropped a 3-1 decision to Rhode Island champion Ken Murgo of Mt. Hope in the quarterfinals.
