INDIANAPOLIS, May 23, 2004 — Waterford High junior Stefanie Shaw, 17, finished fourth in the U.S. Olympic wrestling trials at 63 kilograms (138.75 pounds).
Shaw beat top-seeded Sally Roberts, a bronze medalist at last year’s World Championships, 4-2 in the semifinals. But Shaw lost in the challenge tournament finals to No. 2 seed Alaina Berube, 5-4. In the consolation round, Shaw fell to No. 3 Kaci Lyle by technical fall.
“I got caught a couple of times when I shouldn’t have,” Shaw told the New London Day. “She got me. I’ve got to find out what works and what doesn’t and what I need to work on.”
Shaw qualified for the 2004 U.S. Olympic Trials after winning her weight class at the East Regional qualifier in April in Brockport, New York. Shaw won the 72 kg weight class (158.5 pounds).
