Three former Connecticut wrestlers qualify for NCAA Division I tournament

MARCH 13, 2002 — Three former Connecticut high school wrestling stars have qualified for the NCAA Division I wrestling championships on March 20-22 in Albany, N.Y.

Sacred Heart University’s Anthony Reynolds and Jason Cuccolo each won a Colonial Athletic Association championship to earn bids to the NCAA Tournament. Brown University’s Nick Ciarcia (197) finished third in the EIWA Tournament to earn a NCAA berth.

Reynolds upset top-seeded Chris Skretowicz, 7-2 in the 197-pound final. Top-seeded Cucolo outlasted Joe Cristaldi of Drexel, 8-7 in his 133-pound final. The top two wresters in each weight class qualified for the NCAA Tournament.

Reynolds wrestled at Berlin High while Cuccolo wrestled at Darien. Sacred Heart was sixth in the tournament, which was won by No. 21 Hofstra.

In the EIWA Tournament, Brown sophomore Nick Ciarcia finished third at 197 pounds and earned a spot in the NCAA Tournament. Ciarcia, who lost by tiebreaker in the EIWA semifinals, was a State Open champion from Xavier-Middletown.
