Batres takes silver medal at U20 Pan American Championships

Milford’s Kayla Batres won a silver medal at the U20 Pan American Championships in Brazil on Friday, wrestling for Guatemala at 50 kilograms or 110 pounds.

In four matches, Batres, a student at Greens Farms Academy in Westport, went 2-2, dropping both matches to American Sarissa Tucker of Kanas. Tucker prevailed in group B wrestling with a 9-2 decision and won the gold medal with another 9-2 decision.

Batres beat Brazil’s Giovanna Pimenta in group B action by pin. She was leading 8-2 when she got the pin. In the semifinals, Batres beat Canadian Victoria Stefanov, a student at the University of Alberta, by technical fall, 10-0.

The U.S. led the team standings in women’s freestyle with 230 points after finishing the day with a 34-3 individual match record. Brazil was second with 174 points, while Canada took third with 121 points. Mexico finished fourth with 95 points, followed by Colombia in fifth with 85 points.

Later this summer, Batres will represent Guatemala at the U20 world championships on August 16-23 in Slovakia.
