Two Connecticut schools won New England championships Saturday at Phillips Andover Academy in Andover, Mass.
With eight finalists and five individual champions, Westport’s Greens Farms Academy won their third straight New England Prep School championship with a 24½-point victory over Northfield Mt. Hermon, 331½ to 307.
On the girls side, Wallingford’s Choate Rosemary Hall had four individual champions and captured their first New England championship with a 34½-point win over host Phillips Andover, 168-133½.
All 14 wrestlers from GFA finished in the top six of their respective weight classes, giving the Dragons an advantage over Northfield, who put 10 wrestlers in the finals and brought home three individual champions.
Marlborough’s Jackson Heslin (126) won his second straight New England title for GFA along with teammate Ben Zuckerman (144) of Fairfield. New Fairfield’s Joe Mahoney (138) and GFA teammate’s Liam Carlin (165) and Kingston Daniels Silva (215) each brought home their first New England titles.
Danbury’s Dom Iaquinto (285) fell short in his quest for a second consecutive New England championship, falling to Northfield’s James Bechter, who won a second New England title. Newtown’s Brighton Karvoski (113) also finished second for GFA.
At 106 pounds, GFA’s Kayla Batres of Stratford chose to compete in the boys tournament and finished second to help the Dragons secure the championship.
Batres, who is the No. 1 ranked girl at 110 pounds in the country by USA Wrestling, FloWrestling and the National Wrestling Hall of Fame, went 3-1 in the tournament, picking bonus points for the Dragons with two pins.
Mahoney got a takedown with 1:21 left in the match to beat St. Paul’s Charlie Lussier, 9-7, in the finals at 138 pounds.
Zuckerman got a takedown with 28 seconds left in overtime to beat Canton’s Colby Houle of Northfield Mt. Hermon in the final at 144 pounds, 4-1.
Daniels Silva got a takedown with 12 seconds left in regulation to snap at 1-1 tie and beat Northfield’s Dylan Greenstein, 4-1 in the final at 215 pounds.
A second period reversal was all of the scoring in Bechter’s 2-0 win over Iaquinto in the final at 285 pounds.
In the consolation finals, Southington’s Chase Kastner (120) picked up a key victory over Northfield’s Luke Galipeau with a pin in 2:26. The pin provided bonus points for GFA and denied Northfield an opportunity to pick up additional points at GFA’s expense.
GFA’s Tyler Neiva (Trumbull, 175) and Ryan Schneider (Norwalk, 190) also finished third for the Dragons. Schneider won his consolation round bout with a pin.
Choate Rosemary Hall won their first New England championship with dominating performances from Lily Runez (107), Ledyard’s Tati Irizarry (114), Norwalk’s Calli Gilchrist (120) and Sara McLaughlin (126), who each pinned their way through the entire tournament.
None of the four championship wrestlers competed for more a minute and 26 seconds.
“I am very proud of how these girls wrestled this weekend,” Choate head coach Ryan Roddy said. “This has been years in the making for many of these girls. We are looking forward to the (prep school) nationals.”
McLaughlin, who is from Scituate, Massachusetts, won her second straight New England title with three pins in 33, 14 and 20 seconds. Runez, who is from Keene, N.H., had pins of 29 and 10 seconds to win at 107 pounds.
Gilchrist, who will be at Brown University in the fall, had three pins in 33, 26 and 1:26 at 126 pounds. Irizarry won at 114 with pins of 55, 51 and 57 seconds.
The Prep School national championship meet will be next weekend, Feb. 21-22 at Lehigh University.
Four Choate Rosemary Hall wrestlers finished second – Julie Ha (107), Leanne La (120), Eva Tumanyan (185) and Rhema Woolcock (235) with Elsa Holmes (145) finishing third.
Choate Rosemary Hall is the first Connecticut school to win a New England Prep School girls championship. It is just the sixth tournament for girls, which began in 2019. GFA is the seventh Connecticut school to win a New England Prep School championship but just the third school to win multiple championships. Choate won a pair of titles in 1953 and 1955 while Loomis Chaffee in Windsor four New England titles in 2002, 2003, 2004 and 2006.
