Xavier is No 1 in first top 10 wrestling poll of the season

The first top 10 wrestling poll of the season is out and defending State Open and Class L champion Xavier is No. 1 in voting from state coaches and media members.

It’s the 16th consecutive poll, dating back to January 2022, with the Falcons on top..

Xavier received 13 of 16 first place votes with No. 2 Newtown receiving one first place votes and No. 3 Danbury receiving a pair of first place votes. East Hartford and Fairfield Warde round out the top five.

It’s been another impressive start to the season for Xavier (2-0) with the Falcons finishing third at the Guilford Invitational and winning the 57th annual Mid-Hudson Tournament in New York State for the third time in the last five years. Xavier had four individual champions and six finalists to win the Mid-Hudson event. Xavier finished third in Guilford because several wrestlers were competing at the Beast of the East tournament in Delaware on the same weekend.

No. 2 Newtown (6-0) became the first Connecticut team to win the annual George Bossi Lowell Holiday Tournament with six wrestlers medaling and 23 pins. Newtown didn’t have an individual champion in the event and beat Haverhill, Mass., by five points. The Nighthawks also took second at the Guilford Invitational and captured their own Nighthawk Duals, beating Norwalk in the final, 62-18.

No. 3 Danbury is off to a 5-0 start with a win at their own Ryan Sabbagh Holiday Tournament and five FCIAC victories. Danbury outlasted Fairfield Warde, 38-37 on Dec. 20.

No. 4 East Hartford (5-0) has already captured two tournament trophies. They won the Skip Ardan Invitational in Manchester along with capturing the Frank Chaves Invitational in Simsbury for the first time with six individual champions.

No. 5 Fairfield Warde (4-1) won the Guilford Invitational on the opening weekend of the season. No. 6 New Milford (5-1) won the C.J. McCormack Memorial tournament in Berlin and was third at the Ryan Sabbagh Holiday Tournament in Danbury.

No. 7 RHAM (6-1) was second at the Skip Ardan tournament in Manchester behind East Hartford and was second at the Ryan Sabbagh event in Danbury. The Raptors also won their own RHAM Duals tournament with a 39-34 win over NFA along with a 41-37 victory over Windham in pool competition.

No. 8 Simsbury (2-0) beat RHAM on opening night, 37-33, was 11th at the George Bossi Lowell Holiday Tournament and third at their own Chaves Invitational.

No. 9 Trumbull (11-1) was second at their own McDougall Duals, going 4-1 with their lone loss coming to Ridgefield, 48-33. At the Trumbull Duals a week later, Trumbull was 6-0 including a 40-39 win over NFA and a 37-33 win over Foran.

Rounding out the top 10 is Ridgefield (6-0), who went 5-0 to win the McDougall Duals in Trumbull and finished ninth at the Mid-Hudson Tournament in New York State. It’s the first top 10 appearance for the Tigers since 2007 when they were ranked No. 9 on January 2.

Just three points outside of the top 10 is undefeated Killingly (12-0), who won the Plainville Invitational and captured their own Killingly Holiday Duals tournament with five victories and their own New Year’s Duals tournament with four wins.
