Wolfpack win eight of 10 matches to beat Pitt in ACC opener

Ryan Jack , right, dropped his second match of the season Friday night but No. 8 North Carolina State still beat Pitt in their ACC opener.

PITTSBURGH, Jan. 26, 2024 – No. 8 North Carolina State won eight of ten matches to win their Atlantic Coast Conference opener over No. 19 Pitt on Friday night, 31-6.

Two Panther wrestlers earned victories over top 10 wrestlers. No. 27 Cole Matthews beat No. 4 Ryan Jack of North Carolina State, 15-10, at 141 pounds as Jack (12-2) lost for just the second time this season.

“That was a big win for Cole,” Pitt coach Keith Gavin said. “It was even better that he fell behind and had to fight back. Usually that first takedown is crucial in his matches, but he found a way to score a bunch of points tonight, which was great.”

North Carolina State (11-2, 1-0 ACC) had a pair of two-point victories and two wins by technical fall. Danbury natives Jakob Camacho (125, 7-4) and A.J. Kovacs (165, 8-6) didn’t get the call to wrestle against Pitt (7-6, 0-1).

“We didn’t win the close bouts that we needed to tonight,” Garvin said. “NC State has a really good team, so you have to give them credit. But we’re disappointed with a few of the results from the closer matches that didn’t go our way tonight.”

The Wolfpack return to action next Friday night with another ACC match at North Carolina.
