Danbury beats Mt. Anthony for fourth straight time; Amity girls win medals

DANBURY, Jan. 15, 2024 – No. 4 Danbury got five pins and a victory by technical fall to beat Vermont’s Mt. Anthony Union, 41-27 on Monday night in their annual Martin Luther King Day match.

Danbury (7-0) won nine of 14 matches to beat the visiting Patriots for the fourth straight time since 2019 – the longest winning streak by Danbury in the series that dates back to 2001. The 2021 meet was cancelled due to the pandemic and snow wiped out the 2022 match.

Robert Barry (106), Leo Soto (113), Victor Velez (138), Jesse Defonce (165) and Justin Barker (215) had pins for the Hatters.

There were close battles, too. Mt. Anthony’s Duncan Harrington (120) outlasted Danbury’s Cristian Pote, 6-5 while MAU’s Shawn Gassaway (144) beat Danbury’s Harrison Muller, 4-2.

Mt. Anthony still leads the overall series, 13-9.

Two Amity girls medal
ORANGE, Mass., Jan. 15, 2024 – Two girls from Amity earned medals at the seventh annual Sentators All-Girls tournament at Mahar Regional High on Monday. A record 55 teams from Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Connecticut and New Hampshire had girls in the tournament.’

Amity’s Cristel Miguel finished third at 120 pounds with teammate Amara Santulli taking fifth at the same weight. Lowell, Massachusetts won the tournament for the second straight year. Amity finished tied for 14th place.
