No. 5 Sacred Heart capture Northeast Regional Duals championship

Three Sacred Heart wrestlers finished undefeated to help the No. 5 Sacred Heart women’s wrestling team win the Northeast Regional Duals for the second consecutive year Sunday at East Stroudsburg State University.

The Pioneers (5-2) beat three top 25 teams to win the tournament championship with victories over No. 9 New Jersey City University, 34-11, No. 10 East Stroudsburg, 34-12, No. 22 Elmira College, 39-8 and Western New England University, 36-10.

Ahsia Torres (109), Temi Sanusi (143) and Madison Sandquist (155) each finished 4-0 on the afternoon with Sandquist getting four wins by technical fall and Torres securing a pair of pins. Aaliyah Payne-Parris (101), Bayley Trang (130) and Madeline Hodges (191) each won three bouts.

Sacred Heart’s Alexander Fitzgerald (123) picked up a big win with a 10-2 win over East Stroudsburg’s Mia Macaluso, who is ranked No. 6 and finished third in the nation a year ago.

Out of 40 bouts, the Pioneers won 28 by pin or technical fall. Sacred Heart won eight of 10 matches by pin or technical fall against Elmira.

Sacred Heart returns to action on Sunday when they host three dual meets at the Pitt Center in Fairfield beginning at noon against Delaware Valley. The Pioneers will also face New England College at 1:15 p.m. and No. 8 Lock Haven University at 2:30 p.m.
